NVIDIA Introducing Ampere in March 2020 & Releasing RTX 3080 in June, Analyst Indicates

NVIDIA is allegedly preparing to introduce its next generation family of 7nm graphics cards based on the Ampere architecture next year at GTC in late March and is reportedly planning to release the RTX 3080 around Computex 2020 in June.

There has been a lot of talk in the techsphere lately about NVIDIA’s next generation Ampere graphics cards, which was initially sparked by the company allegedly communicating some initial marketing and go-to-market strategy for Ampere.

NVIDIA Allegedly Introducing Next Generation 7nm Ampere GPUs in March 2020 at GTC

According to several rumors floating around, NVIDIA CEO & co-founder Jensen Huang is said to be not in too much of a hurry to bring Ampere to market just yet, largely due to how well positioned Turing already is in the market against the competition from AMD. Especially in the high-end segment where the RTX 2080 and RTX 2080 Ti sit uncontested.

However, with AMD preparing its own alleged “NVIDIA Killer” high-end ray tracing graphics card for next year, team green is getting ready to preempt the red team with Ampere in the first half of 2020.

According to Raymond James analyst Chris Caso via HKEPC, NVIDIA has allegedly pushed Ampere back a few months, which is currently in the beginning of its ramp. Ampere is now set mainly for an announcement at GTC next year in late March. According to Caso NVIDIA plans to kick off Ampere’s introduction with a new datacenter focused AI product first , i.e. an Ampere based TESLA accelerator at GTC.

NVIDIA Allegedly Launching the RTX 3080 Around Computex in June 2020

Gaming GeForce RTX 3000 series graphics cards based on the Ampere architecture are said to follow a couple of months later with Computex 2020 being the target. The roll-out will reportedly begin with the introduction of high-end Ampere graphics cards first and will be gradual with Ampere graphics cards replacing their Turing predecessors over several months.

NVIDIA is reportedly planning to announce the RTX 3080 in June with a showcase of the new graphics cards in or just around Computex in early June of next year. Even though the source doesn’t go into details about which specific graphics cards will launch first other than the fact that they will be “high-end”, from a practical point of view it’s more likely that NVIDIA will introduce the RTX 3070 alongside the RTX 3080 and ahead of the RTX 3080 Ti.

This is simply because it’s unlikely that the 7nm process will be mature enough to support the introduction of big Ampere at a consumer level price point so early in Ampere’s life cycle. An Ampere Titan release followed by an RTX 3080 Ti later is more likely. Other GeForce 3000 series graphics cards targeting the mid-range such as the 3060 and 3050 are expected to follow the RTX 3080 and RTX 3070 a couple of months later in the summer.

NVIDIA Ampere RTX 3000 Series – Performance & Pricing ( Rumors )

RTX 3000 series Ampere graphics cards are rumored to bring substantially better ray tracing and rasterization performance. They are also rumored to feature bigger frame buffers cross the lineup as compared to Turing. They will also allegedly have slightly higher clock speeds and lower TDPs compared to their 2000 series Turing counterparts.

In terms of pricing the new cards are rumored to be cheaper in the high-end, specifically the RTX 3080 and 3080 Ti will allegedly be priced more attractively than the RTX 2080 and 2080 Ti.

This RGB memory kit runs faster in certain Gigabyte Aorus motherboards

In certain Aorus motherboards, Gigabyte’s newest DDR4-3600 kit can boost to 3733MHz.

Gigabyte has added an interesting feature to its newest Aorus RGB memory kit, one that allows it to run faster in certain motherboards with minimal fuss. It’s called “Aorus Boost,” and it gives users up to a 4 percent bump in performance.

Even without the boost feature, Gigabyte’s new 16GB (2x8GB) DDR4-3600 memory kit is the fastest one it has released so far. At 3600MHz, the timings are configured at 18-19-19-39, according to the RAM’s main product page and Gigabyte’s press release. (Curiously, the specifications section lists slightly higher timings—19-19-19-43 on Intel platforms and 20-19-19-43 on Ryzen configs, so go figure.)

It’s the boost feature that is somewhat interesting, though.

“Many users often look to overclock their RAM and tweak their timings for higher memory frequencies and better performance. Memory overclocking can be a hit or miss though with users often spending lots of time trying to unlock better memory performance to little effect as their overclocked memory performance falls short of their expectations,” Gigabyte explains.

This is where Aorus Boost comes into play. On certain Aorus X570 and Z390 motherboards, there is an Aorus Memory Boost setting in the BIOS that will apply the necessary settings to increase the frequency up to 3733MHz. Compatible motherboards include the following models:

Z390 Aorus Xtreme Waterforce 5G

Z390 Aorus Xtreme Waterforce

Z390 Aorus Xtreme

Z390 Aorus Master

Z390 Aorus Ultra

Z390 Aorus Pro WiFi

X570 Aorus Xtreme

X570 Aorus Master

X570 Aorus Ultra

X570 Aorus Pro WiFi

X570 Aorus Pro

X570 I Aorus Pro WiFi

It’s not clear what effect this has on timings; I presume they get loosened a touch. Outside of the boost feature, Gigabyte says this kit is built on a “10-layer, sophisticated PCG that ensures the stability and performance” of the memory chips, which are “100 percent sorted and tested.” Binning is a common practice on the best RAM kits, though, so this is not unique to Gigabyte.

There are two versions of this kit available. Both sport a pair of 8GB modules, but the second version also includes a couple of “demo modules.” These are dummy modules for people who want to fill all their DIMM slots with RGB lighting, without buying more RAM.

Gigabyte did not say when this RAM will be available or how much the two versions will cost. As a point of reference, Gigabyte’s Aorus RGB 16GB DDR4-3200 memory kit with demo modules sell for $169.99 on Amazon.

That said, if you are in the market for RAM (or pretty much anything else), it might be worth waiting a week to see what of Black Friday deals emerge.

This new HyperJuice 100W GaN charger could be the charger of your dreams

Gallium nitride chargers have been getting better fast since they first came out earlier this year — we started with 30W and 45W chargers, then small 61W bricks, then a 60W charger with two USB-C ports, and there was a small 65W charger with two USB-C ports and a USB-A port in September. But now we might have a new wall charging king, as Hyper launched a Kickstarter for the HyperJuice 100W GaN charger — which delivers the maximum amount of power that USB-C can muster under the current standard, in a package that’s about the size of a deck of cards.

It also has built-in prongs on the back that you flip out so you can plug it into an outlet. But be careful plugging it into a wall — the charger sticks out far enough that it looks pretty easy to run into and accidentally knock out:

The charger can push a full 100 watts of power — which could theoretically let you fully power a powerful 15-inch MacBook Pro and an iPhone 11 Pro simultaneously, or a 13-inch Pro and a MacBook Air — because it’s using gallium nitride (GaN), which is more efficient than silicon because it can sustain higher voltages and can run current faster than silicon can — which all has the benefit of opening up more possibilities for small yet powerful charging devices like the HyperJuice.

If this truly does seem like your dream wall charger and you want to back it, it seems likely you’ll get the product Hyper has promised — the company has a good track record when it comes to crowdfunding, having successfully used Kickstarter in the past for marketing and preorders. Other Kickstarted products include the Sanho HyperCube, which lets you add USB and microSD storage to your phone charger, and the the HyperJuice USB-C battery pack, which was the first to support the 100W USB-C Power Delivery 3.0 Profile.

Hyper says the HyperJuice 100W GaN wall charger will start shipping to early bird backers in January 2020 (but unfortunately, those are sold out already), and to other Kickstarter backers in February 2020. If you back it on Kickstarter now, you’ll get it for a bit cheaper than its expected retail price of $99 — but how cheap depends on which tier you buy, and how soon you do.

Chinese SSD Manufacturer Races Forward to PCIe 5.0

According to a report by Chinese media IThome, Jiangsu Huacun Electronic Technology has demoed its PCIe 5.0 controller at the 2019 Nantong New Generation Information Technology Expo. The memory and storage manufacturer is optimistic that the controller will be in mass-production by the end of 2020.

It was only this year that computer hardware started to arrive with support for the PCIe 4.0 standard. Presently, PCIe 4.0 is still limited to AMD’s current Ryzen desktop CPUs, Ryzen Threadripper HEDT (high-end desktop) CPU line and Epyc server processor portfolio. Intel has yet to board the PCIe 4.0 train, but is expected to do so soon.

Little is known about the HC9001 PCIe 5.0 controller. It’s reportedly produced with the 12nm manufacturing process by the China National Research Institute and Jiangsu Huacun Electronic Technology. The HC9001, which is China’s first domestic PCIe 5.0 controller, is gaining a lot of buzz, so perhaps we’ll get more information as time progresses.

The PCIe 5.0 standard promises to deliver a throughput up to 128 GBps over a x16 slot. This is double the bandwidth of what the PCIe 4.0 interface can do. At this point, PCIe 5.0 would be overkill for the average consumer, considering that today’s mainstream graphics cards and SSDs aren’t fast enough to use PCIe 4.0 to its max potential. However, PCIe 5.0 will certainly be a welcomed progression in the cloud computing, big data, AI and 5G industries.

An unconfirmed Intel roadmap shows the chipmaker adopting the PCIe 5.0 standard with its forthcoming Sapphire Rapids enterprise-grade processors in 2021. So far, we haven’t heard anything about PCIe 5.0 on the AMD front.

Chrome web apps will soon tout desktop-like speed

If web apps are going to truly replace native apps, they’ll need the near-instantaneous responsiveness of desktop apps. That appears to be on the horizon, thankfully. Google is unveiling Chrome tools that will help web apps run as quickly as their native counterparts, not to mention make them more usable offline. A newly introduce Web Bundles framework will let developers distribute fast-loading web apps through “any format,” including USB drives — you wouldn’t even need to be online to start using an app. Background syncing and context indexing, meanwhile, will let apps “proactively” cache data to make sure it’s quickly available whether or not you’re connected.

Web Bundles are available now through an experimental flag in Chrome, while background syncing and content indexing are only available as “origin trials.”

Other updates are more about offering native-like features. An SMS Receiver allows text-base two-factor authentication for secure sign-ins, while a contact picker and a native file system framework respectively help you share and save data more like you’d expect.

It’s up to developers to make use of these technologies, so don’t expect the web to change overnight. That’s particularly true when many website creators may want software-agnostic web apps that work equally well on Firefox, Opera, Safari and other common browsers. If enough web app writers do embrace this, though, Chromebooks may be more viable for people used to the performance and convenience of apps on other platforms.

Review: Microsoft Surface Pro X

Microsoft says the Surface Pro X—the latest version of its vaunted 2-in-1 tablet-puter—is the thinnest, fastest, lightest, longest-battery-lived, and fastest-charging Surface to date. Most of these superlatives are made possible by the inclusion of a brand-new CPU called the SQ1, which was designed not with Intel or AMD but rather with Qualcomm.

The catch is that, like the smartphone CPUs Qualcomm makes, it’s designed to be a small, cool, power miser … and not something to give you the full-blown Windows experience. Nonetheless, Microsoft’s stated goal with this machine was “to take a mobile architecture and push the technology to make it a fully functioning powerful PC.” Whether the Surface Pro X is actually “fully functioning” is open for debate.

Chip Switch

The new SQ1 chip runs at 3 GHz, and the review system Microsoft sent to me came with 16 GB of RAM and a 256-GB SSD. The 13-inch screen runs at 2880 x 1920 pixels. Connectivity comes via two USB-C ports (and that’s it).

There’s no question that the Surface Pro X will be a decidedly divisive device, an exercise in compromises that may be OK for many but which will be a nonstarter for power users. Let’s start with the biggie: The SQ1 can run Windows 10 and the Microsoft Office suite, but there’s also a lot that it can’t run. Namely, it can’t run any 64-bit Windows programs designed for Intel chips (which, today, is almost everything), and it can only run older 32-bit programs via a behind-the-scenes emulator.

I tried downloading a number of the most popular apps from the Microsoft Store and found that several wouldn’t install—nor would the vast majority of the standard benchmarks I run. Even apps that did install didn’t always work right. An old 32-bit version of PCMark 8 (originally released in 2013) crashed midway through its run, for example. Apps that do run, like the 32-bit version of Chrome, are noticeably slow. Running browser-based tests like Speedometer and JetStream on Chrome put performance on par with your typical $300 Chromebook. In other words, I hope you like Microsoft Edge. (It’s also worth noting: The system takes three times as long to boot up as the Surface Pro 7.)

Want to run Photoshop? Fortnite? You can’t—at least, not in any meaningful way. Critically, Microsoft says that Adobe’s Creative Cloud is being ported to run on the SQ1, but no one is offering a timeline, which may as well mean never. I did manage to get one gaming benchmark to run on the Surface Pro X: Monster Hunter. For the sake of comparison, I managed a score of 3,304 on the Surface Pro 7 and a mere 1,954 on the Surface Pro X.

But hey, you might be saying, I’m on board with Microsoft’s vision and really do just want to use my tablet for web browsing and writing the occasional poem in Word. I don’t need to run AutoCAD and never will. Is the Surface Pro X right for me?

Unfortunately, I still think not. Part of the concept behind the SQ1 is that the power-sipping ARM chip will give the system unheard-of battery life. That’s curious, because just last month, Microsoft bragged about the Surface Pro 7’s epic battery life, which topped eight hours in my testing. But when I ran the same rundown test on the Surface Pro X (a standardized YouTube loop at maximum brightness), I managed just over 6.5 hours. Sure, the Surface Pro X’s screen is about 10 percent brighter than the Surface Pro 7’s, but the claim still doesn’t add up. After I knocked the brightness down to a bit below that of the Surface Pro 7, I still only managed less than 7.5 hours of running time. Only when I dropped the brightness down to its absolute minimum (which makes the screen barely visible in daylight) did I manage to top the system’s claimed 13 hours of battery life.

Add It Up

OK, so compatibility is poor, performance isn’t great, and battery life doesn’t measure up, either. Surely that means the Surface Pro X is designed with affordability in mind, right? Sorry, as with anything with “X” in the name, the Surface Pro X is a premium-priced product that starts at $999. My test unit was $1,499 as configured. Again, to compare, the Surface Pro 7 starts at just $749.

That extra $250 does get you something, at least. The screen is slightly larger—13 inches versus 12.3 inches—and the system is virtually the same thickness and weight as the Pro 7. (Technically the Pro X is 1 gram lighter than the Pro 7.) The new Surface Pro X keyboard is slimmer and comes with a nifty magnetic tray that holds the bundled stylus, but these are still sold separately from the Pro X; the combo will run you an extra $270. One hands-down plus: LTE is included with every version of the Pro X; just add a SIM card and a data plan and you’re ready to go mobile.

I’d also be remiss if I didn’t mention the bizarre behavior I experienced after my first day of using the Surface Pro X. Out of nowhere, the system began behaving as if possessed, scrolling through web pages, opening new tabs, selecting and clicking on text, and even repositioning the task bar from the bottom of the screen to the left. I eventually discovered that phantom screen taps were being registered when the system was otherwise not in use, and after some back and forth, Microsoft sent me a whole new unit to test. One potential diagnosis was that I was charging the system via one of its two USB-C ports instead of via the magnetic charger. That didn’t turn out to be the problem, but if that’s an actual issue, it’s an even bigger deal-breaker than any of the above complaints.

Additionally, my system crashed more than once, giving me an honest-to-God blue screen, even during minimal workloads. Several days into my testing Microsoft rolled out a hardware update designed to improve stability and battery life. I didn’t encounter any additional trouble after that, but it will take long-term testing for people to discover whether these kinds of problems will be ongoing.

After several days of working with the Surface Pro X, I remained confused as to why the product exists. It’s inferior to the Surface Pro 7 in nearly every imaginable dimension, and it smacks of either corporate hubris, greed, or both, with Microsoft attempting to position its own brand as a credible alternative to Intel. The way it stands now, that’s an utter fool’s errand.

Here’s my prediction: The Surface Pro X will go down in history alongside Microsoft Bob and Clippy as one of the worst mistakes it has ever made. I expect it will be quietly discontinued in a year or so.

Also, you should not buy one.

DELL batteries have two main ratings on them: Volts and Amperes. Because size and weight of batteries is limited when compared to larger batteries such as car batteries, most companies show their ratings with Volts and Milliamperes. One thousand Milliamperes equals 1 Ampere. When buying a battery, select batteries with the most Milliamperes (or mAh). Batteries are also rated by Watt-Hours, perhaps the simplest rating of all. This is found by multiplying the Volts and the Amperes together. For example:

  • 14.4 Volts, 4000mAh (Note: 4000mAh is equal to 4.0 Amperes).
  • 14.4 x 4.0 = 57.60 Watt-Hours

Watt-Hours signifies the energy needed to power one watt for one hour.
