OnePlus 8 review: Thinner, lighter, and prettier than the Pro

After announcing the OnePlus 8 family a couple of weeks ago, the company released the two handsets this week. While we reviewed the OnePlus 8 Pro flagship last week, it’s now time to turn our attention to its non-Pro sibling, the OnePlus 8.

While the Pro is only available unlocked from OnePlus and Amazon, the OnePlus 8 is the one that you’ll actually be able to get from carriers, including T-Mobile and Verizon. And since the OnePlus 8 5G UW is sold on Verizon, that makes it the only model that supports both sub6 and mmWave 5G.

Starting at $699, this is definitely the more mainstream version of the OnePlus 8 series, missing out on things like wireless charging and a 120Hz refresh rate on the display. It’s still pretty awesome though, with a 90Hz OLED screen, and a particularly sexy Interstellar Glow color.

Compare Deals

Pricing is $699 for the model with 8GB RAM and 128GB storage, or $799 for 12GB RAM and 256GB storage. The Verizon variant is a bit more expensive at $799 for the 128GB model, but that’s also for better 5G support.

Design

As far as design goes, the OnePlus 8 is superior to the Pro, at least in my opinion. Right out of the gate, let’s start with the color. The OnePlus 8 comes in a color called Interstellar Pro, and it’s gorgeous. As I remarked in my review of the Pro, I can’t believe they reserved it for the non-Pro. Interstellar Glow is the clear winner of the color selection.

Note that if you love the Glacial Green that the Pro does come in, you can get that too. Interstellar Glow is a mirrored color that has a rainbow-colored gradient, which changes based on how the light is reflected off of it. Even the reflections look beautiful.

Yes, it is a fingerprint magnet, and no, the matte Glacial Green is not. That’s a matter of preference, whether you want the prettier one or if you want the one that’s easier to maintain. You might end up using a case too, such as the new Glacial Green Sandstone case that OnePlus is offering.

It’s not just the color that makes me like the design better though. The camera bump is much smaller. If you’re not using a case on the Pro, it sticks out like a sore thumb. On the OnePlus 8, the camera bump is a little bit more subtle. Also, the handset as a whole has a slightly smaller footprint, making it easier to hold.

It’s also thinner and 19g lighter. Actual usability is something that I feel like we don’t talk about as much as we should. Sometimes we look for power, camera performance, sexy displays, and battery life without taking a look at what that does to the overall form factor. It’s worth talking about now because with the OnePlus 8, it might actually be a proper balance.

On the bottom of the aluminum frame, there’s a USB Type-C port for charging, a speaker grille, and a dual nano-SIM slot. The unit that I have is unlocked, so I can’t confirm that the carrier models are dual-SIM, although they’re almost certainly not.

On the right side of the device, there’s a power button and a switch to turn notification sounds on or off. There are three settings: on, vibrate, and silent. It’s a nice and easy way to adjust this, something that OnePlus has been doing for years now. Outside of the Android world, I’ve only ever seen this feature from Apple, and I wish more OEMs did it.

Finally, the volume rocker is on the left side of the device. Not much to talk about there.

90Hz Fluid AMOLED display

OnePlus used a 6.55-inch 90Hz FHD OLED display, as opposed to the 6.78-inch 120Hz QHD OLED screen that’s found in the Pro. There’s some good and some bad here.

The good is that I don’t think that there’s a noticeable difference between 90Hz and 120Hz, or between FHD and QHD. For years, we’ve been used to 60Hz screens, and the smooth animations on higher refresh rates make for a pleasant experience, but I really think 90Hz is fine. OnePlus is actually the first to popularize the feature too with last year’s OnePlus 7 Pro. And like I said, I don’t think anyone can really tell the difference between FHD and QHD on a screen this small.

OnePlus brought the 90Hz refresh rate to the non-Pro lineup with the 7T, but that screen was flat. Now, the edges are curved, so if you’re a fan of flat screens, as many people seem to be these days, you’re out of luck.

The screen is beautiful, just like the one on the Pro. It has vibrant colors, true blacks, and smooth animations. The bad is just that it seems to be a bit buggy. If you turn on Night Mode, there are some real scrolling issues. Text is impossible to read, icons look distorted when scrolling through the app drawer, and more. This even happens when scrolling slowly.

It really takes away from the smooth scrolling and animations that I expect from a 90Hz display, and from what actually does happen when Night Mode is off.

There’s also no always-on display, which is a real shame. If you raise the phone, you’ll see a UI like the one above, which means that you don’t have to press the power button to use the in-display fingerprint sensor. OnePlus is adding an AoD though; it just hasn’t said when.

I want to reiterate that it has an in-display fingerprint sensor, one of the fastest and most accurate on the market. This is important because premium smartphones from Apple and Google only have facial recognition, which is unusable these days if you have to wear a mask all the time.

Zen Mode

Like the switch to control notification sounds, Zen Mode is another unique feature that OnePlus offers. It debuted with last year’s OnePlus 7 Pro, and what it does is it simply keeps you from using your phone. Last year, you could set it to work for 20 minutes, but you can now set it to 20, 30, 40, or 60 minutes.

All you can do while in Zen Mode is make emergency calls, receive calls, and access the camera. Notifications are muted, but you’ll still get them if you’re wearing a smartwatch, oddly enough.

Once you’re in Zen Mode, there’s no way out besides riding out the clock. Even if you restart the phone, that won’t help.

Camera

The OnePlus 8 has a triple-lens camera system, but it’s inferior to the OnePlus 8 Pro. The main sensor is a 48MP Sony IMX586, and while it has the same f/1.75 aperture, the sensor is smaller. That means that low-light performance isn’t quite on par with the Pro. There’s also no telephoto lens, including a 2MP macro lens instead. And finally, there’s a 16MP ultra-wide sensor.

The main sensor does support 4K video capture at 60fps, but there’s no 8K video recording like we’ve seen on various Snapdragon 865 devices so far this year. It’s likely because OnePlus wanted to use quad pixel binning for better low light performance. The front camera is still limited to 1080p at 30fps.

The camera does promise 2x lossless zoom, even though there’s no 2x zoom lens. That’s just generally what you get from such a high-resolution sensor.

There’s actually a lot that I like about this camera, considering the specs and what it’s lacking when compared to the Pro. Low-light performance is OK, but Nightscape mode gets the job done. As was also my complaint with the OnePlus 8 Pro, low-light performance with the ultra-wide camera is terrible, and you can’t compensate for it with Nightscape because the feature only works with the main sensor.

OnePlus also likes to release software updates to improve the product over time. We’ve already seen numerous camera improvements via updates, such as better focusing in low-light conditions.

Performance and battery life

As always, performance is solid. The OnePlus 8 includes the best Android chipset on the market, the Snapdragon 865, along with up to 12GB RAM and up to 256GB UFS 3.0 storage. OnePlus had actually sent me the 8GB RAM OnePlus 8 Pro, but the 12GB RAM OnePlus 8, so this thing felt blazingly fast at all times.

It also includes a Snapdragon X55 modem for 5G connectivity, although most models only support sub6 5G. To be completely honest, you won’t notice a massive difference between this and 4G right now, but it should get better over time. T-Mobile is the biggest name in this arena right now, since it actually has a nationwide sub6 network.

Verizon is more focused on mmWave, although it does have sub6 coming later on this year. The problem with millimeter wave 5G is that it only works in line of sight with a base station. You’ll only ever get it outdoors, and it won’t even work while it’s in your pocket. Real 5G is going to be a combination of sub6 and mmWave, and the only variant of the OnePlus 8 that actually supports that is the Verizon model.

Battery life is pretty good, getting through the day without issue under moderate usage. Obviously, it goes down if you use it a lot, and what I mean if that if you play games on your phone for a couple of hours on end, you’ll have to charge it before the end of the day.

Warp Charge 30T is awesome. A half-hour charge will keep you going for a while. The real shame is that there’s no wireless charging. Even if it didn’t have the magnificent 30W wireless charging that’s available on the Pro, I’d take 10W Qi charging just to keep it on the wireless charging pad on my desk all day.

For benchmarks, I used Geekbench 5, AnTuTu, and GFXBench. First up is Geekbench 5, which tests the CPU.

This isn’t the first Snapdragon 865 device of the year, so I won’t dwell on these scores that are nearly identical as the ones I got on the OnePlus 8 Pro, Galaxy S20+ 5G, LG V60 ThinQ 5G, and more. Next up is AnTuTu, which tests everything.

The overall score is similar to the 576,696 one I got on the OnePlus 8 Pro, but the Pro did a lot better in the UX (particularly User Experience) section, and it was made up for in the memory section. I wonder if the 12GB RAM Pro would have had a better score here. Anyway, next up is GFXBench, which tests the CPU.

Conclusion

I believe that the OnePlus 8 series includes two phones that are the best on the market right now. Apple’s iPhones and Google’s Pixels are non-starters without a fingerprint sensor, and I really couldn’t stand Samsung’s software or camera on the Galaxy S20+. Motorola’s Edge+ is a great all-around package, but it’s a Verizon exclusive.

If you ask me, the real decision is between the OnePlus 8 and the OnePlus 8 Pro. The Pro costs $200 more for similar specs. It’s $699 and $799 for 8GB/128GB and 12GB/256GB on the OnePlus 8, respectively, and $899 and $999 for the OnePlus 8 Pro. What you get for that extra $200 is 30W wireless charging (10W if it’s not OnePlus’s own charger), a better camera with a telephoto lens, and a 120Hz display.

Whether those extra specs are worth it is up to you, but I really like the OnePlus 8. In fact, I almost like it more regardless of the price. It’s thinner, lighter, and it has a smaller footprint. It’s prettier with its Interstellar Glow color, and it has a smaller camera bump.

Microsoft Issues Windows 10 Update Warning

Microsoft has recently hinted at big changes coming to Windows 10 updates, but that doesn’t help the here and now – especially after a rotten run of bad updates recently. And now Microsoft has warned you must be alert again.

Picked up by Windows Latest, Microsoft has confirmed that its “new final build” of the big Windows 10 May 2020 Update is ready but it will ship with several known issues.

The company warns that after the update, Windows 10 users will find Windows Mixed Reality, its platform for virtual and augmented reality applications with more than 2,500 games and VR experiences, “may not work correctly for many users”. In addition, its DISM (Deployment Image Servicing and Management) tool has problems whereby it may not report the correct status when repairing corruption on systems, and there are issues with text entry in some niche cases.

The good news is Microsoft is working on fixes and, unsurprisingly, it is making fixes for Windows Mixed Reality a priority “which we hope to release in early May.” Despite this, Microsoft will continue the rollout of the Windows 10 May 2020 Update and anyone who checks for updates (Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update) will receive it.

What does the May 2020 update bring? It’s mostly tweaks and fixes (aside from the things Microsoft knows it breaks) along with upgrades to the Windows Subsystem for Linux and graphical improvements to the Settings and Task Manager user interfaces. So yes, it isn’t essential and I would advise mainstream users stay away from it right now.

Microsoft does have (overdue) plans to improve Windows 10 updates, but with the platform recently passing one billion installations, the vast majority of users would be wise to remain cautious.

What is the run time of ALCATEL battery?

ALCATEL batteries have two main ratings on them: Volts and Amperes. Because size and weight of batteries is limited when compared to larger batteries such as car batteries, most companies show their ratings with Volts and Milliamperes. One thousand Milliamperes equals 1 Ampere. When buying a battery, select batteries with the most Milliamperes (or mAh). Batteries are also rated by Watt-Hours, perhaps the simplest rating of all. This is found by multiplying the Volts and the Amperes together. For example:

  • 14.4 Volts, 4000mAh (Note: 4000mAh is equal to 4.0 Amperes).
  • 14.4 x 4.0 = 57.60 Watt-Hours

Watt-Hours signifies the energy needed to power one watt for one hour.

What is the run time of AGM battery?

AGM batteries have two main ratings on them: Volts and Amperes.

MSI GF65 THIN 9SEXR GAMING LAPTOP REVIEW

I don’t mean to be disparaging of the MSI GF65 THIN 9SEXR, but take a look at its technical specifications and you’ll find the same parts that have been powering our machines for over a year—there’s truly nothing Super, 7nm, or 10th Gen about it. Yet its announcement has come as part of one of the few captivating developments in gaming laptops beyond AMD’s Ryzen 4000 APUs.

With the release of its Super GPU silicon for mobile, the RTX 2070 Super and RTX 2080 Super, Nvidia also promised to make its RTX 2060 GPU available in a gaming laptop for under ($999) £999. That potentially means more to parsimonious customers than high-end GPUs, and it’s not often that gaming laptops are level-pegging with their DIY PC counterparts. MSI’s GF65 is one of the first of a handful of gaming laptops to make good on that promise. In the UK, anyways.

It’s powered by an RTX 2060, marking a step-up upgrade over the GTX 1660 Ti in 2019’s top model. With that not only comes the promise of a Turing GPU fit with 6GB of GDDR6 and 1,920 CUDA Cores—with the added potential of portable AI acceleration in creative applications and Nvidia’s updated Turing encoder—but also an easier point of entry into real-time ray tracing and Nvidia’s AI upscaling technology, DLSS 2.0.

At first glance not much has changed with the exterior of the GF65 compared with its predecessor. Both feature the same inornate chassis at 21.7mm thick, and the largely plastic construction does leave a lot to be desired. It’s undoubtedly a little on the large size, too, especially as we’ve already seen some incredibly thin gaming laptops so far this year. But at 1.86kg it is at least lighter than some comparable laptops in this price bracket.

The 15.6-inch 1080p panel is surrounded by a bezel that, while at its thinnest point extends only 0.7mm, reaches 2.7cm closer to the hinges. At least it houses a panel rated to 120Hz, which is suitably fast to make good on the promises of the RTX 2060 within. And it’s also of the IPS variety, so good marks here for an all-round decent panel pairing for the GF65’s entry-level RTX GPU.

Joining the fray is Intel’s Core i7 9750H. Despite the first wave of Intel 10th Gen Comet Lake H-series laptops starting to filter out from the rank and file of Intel’s partners—including MSI’s very own GF63 Slim in identical garb to the GF65—it’s instead made the decision to stick with the older, cheaper, Core i7 9750H. With relatively familiar specifications from the 14nm family, and an apparent price premium on the 10th Gen chips—by Intel’s own admission—I can’t help but think it made the right choice.

While the Core i7 9750H hits max velocity at 4.5GHz—quite a bit lower than its 10th Gen sibling—what matters most is whether it can sustain its rated clocks. In a single-core run of Cinebench R15, it maintained 4.4GHz for the duration, only a touch shy of the chip’s rated limit of 4.5GHz boost, and in multi-core testing that drops to around the 3.7GHz mark, but maintains it throughout.

So whatever misgivings I may have for the chassis in terms of its looks, it’s capable enough of maintaining decent performance. We saw no significant dips in performance across a lengthy three run marathon of the Metro Exodus benchmark at ultra, either. Temperatures soared to 97 degrees max for the CPU and 81 degrees max for the GPU that same run, but thankfully severe throttling was avoided with some judicious fan RPM—it’s far from the quietest laptop going.

Throughout our gaming benchmarks, the MSI GF65 performs well—if only a little shy of the Asus TUF FA506IV equipped with an RTX 2060 and AMD Ryzen 4800H. That’s true in all but Far Cry New Dawn where the TUF inexplicably, and repeatedly, soared above the rest.

What could become a boon to the GF65 (and the TUF, for that matter) is the growing prevalence of DLSS within the latest games. With DLSS offering the ability to improve frame rates, with little downside on the second-gen DLSS 2.0, the jump to the RTX 2060 nets the possibility of a large performance boon over 16-series cards of more than the silicon technically allows. You will have to put your faith in Nvidia and game developers to go above and beyond to access that performance, however, and it’s by no means a guarantee—the least bit for older games.

And while that all makes an RTX 2060 for under £1,000 sound like an alluring offer, MSI has made some sacrifices with the 2020 model of the GF65 in order to scrape in under the mark.

Both memory and storage have been stripped back in order to keep the balance sheet for parts in good stead with the shift to the RTX 20-series GPU. Unfortunately, that means replacing the 512GB SSD with a 256GB one, which after OS installation is running frightfully low on capacity with only a few benchmarks installed. That puts a hard limit on your choice of games (or game), too. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare is absolutely out of the question without an upgrade.

The decision to pare back memory to single-channel will also strike fear in the hearts of many a PC builder. The 8GB of dual-channel memory is capable of getting by in most titles, especially at 1080p on a laptop such as this. But with only a single channel in play, that 8GB doesn’t get you very far. Memory bandwidth is significantly hampered, and that may find you dropping frames in demanding games or incredibly conscious of app RAM usage for the duration of your time with the GF65.

The last-gen GF65 (2019) doesn’t suffer the same fate. For a similar price tag, last year’s model comes with a GTX 1660 Ti, 16GB of dual-channel memory, and a 512GB panel. The Asus TUF FA506IV, too. Granted, £300 is no small matter more, but its Ryzen 4000 mobile/RTX 2060 combo is a great buy. And it’s got all the memory and storage you could want at that price and form factor. The GF65 THIN 9SEXR feels like a partially incomplete product by comparison, and lacking what is required to get the most out of it.

The models available in the US have seen especially harsh cuts to come in under $1,000. In order to get your hands on an RTX 2060 for $999, you’ll have to make do with Intel’s Core i5 9300H, in lieu of the Core i7 9750H found in the UK model. At least the storage has returned to a healthy 512GB SSD.

In order to hit a specification roughly analogous with the UK model at £999, you’ll have to spend $1,099. That’s actually rather favourable to the dollar when you look at today’s exchange rate, and you still hold on to that 512GB SSD, but it’s not quite in keeping with Nvidia’s $999 promise, is it?

Strangely the MSI GF65 THIN 9SEXR will be available exclusively at Curry’s PC World from May 4th in the UK. If you reside in the US, you can find that similar configuration I mentioned for $1,099 across major retailers.

With the specs list of the UK model as it is, the GF65 does leave me wanting for more. Performance is decent in today’s games, but I’m not entirely convinced how much ray tracing you’re going to get done with a spec that only gets by with the skin of its teeth without cutting-edge rendering tech helping to grind performance into pulp.

But I usually recommend overspending on your graphics card and making up for less storage capacity when you can afford it—so why should a laptop be any different? The upgrade process is at least a simple one. Pop the underside off by removing an ungodly quantity of screws and you’ll find a spare NVMe slot and a spare SODIMM slot. Both can be fitted with off-the-shelf parts as and when you have the budget to do so. Two NVMe slots also makes for an easy transfer if you do end up swapping out your boot drive.

As important as it is to point out what’s been lost in order to hit £999, it’s just as important to quantify what has been gained as a result of offering RTX at this price point. You can’t upgrade a laptop GPU yourself, after all, it’s soldered down tight. So the shift to the RTX 2060, even with sacrifice, may make the most financial sense for someone looking to buy an RTX laptop without the means to immediately buy one that’s high-end on all counts.

Microsoft’s Surface Book 3 passes through FCC

Expected in May, the imminent launch of Microsoft’s Surface Book 3 is one step closer as it’s now passed through the FCC. Spotted by Windows Latest, the filing once again shows something only called Portable Computing Device, just like when the Surface Go 2 was certified by the FCC.

Other than that, there’s not much to tell here. This is just another milestone that demonstrates that Microsoft is close to announcing the product.

As for what the Surface Book 3 will actually be, there are still a lot of questions. We’re expecting to see Intel’s 10th-generation ‘Comet Lake’ CPUs, along with newer Nvidia GeForce GTX 16xx graphics. According to a few reports, there will be Quadro options as well. But other than the internals, not much is known about if or how the design will change.

The Surface Book has historically been criticized for its hinge gap and its poor weight balance. Both of these are due to its unique design, with a detachable display. Other than the GPU and one of the two batteries, all of the internals are stored in the screen so it can work when it’s detached. Naturally, this results in a heavier tablet portion.

Third-generation Surface products are typically where the product matures though, and typically where kinks are worked out. We’ve seen this in the Surface Pro 3, Surface 3, and most recently, the Surface Laptop 3. Hopefully, the Surface Book 3 will follow suit.

New Huawei P Smart leaks, and it includes Google apps

According to a new leak from WinFuture, Huawei is set to refresh its P Smart handset. The device itself isn’t particularly exciting, sitting quietly in the lower end of the mid-tier. What’s interesting is that according to the report, Huawei is actually going to load it up with Google apps.

To be clear, American companies still aren’t allowed to do business with the Shenzhen firm. This is because about a year ago, it was added to the U.S. Department of Commerce’s Entity List, thanks to U.S. President Donald Trump’s trade war with China. Since then, the company has launched a number of devices from its Huawei and Honor brands, all without Google services on them.

What makes the P Smart different, according to WinFuture, is that it’s an old device in a new chassis. It has the same octa-core HiSilicon Kirin 710F (four 2.2GHz Cortex-A73 cores and four 1.7GHz Cortex-A53 cores) as its predecessor, and it also has the same 13MP f/2 main camera. It maintains the 2MP depth camera as well, along with the 3,400mAh battery.

What’s different is that it comes with a 6.21-inch 2340×1080 LCD, 4GB RAM instead of 3GB, and 128GB of storage instead of 64GB. The version of Android will still be 9.0 Pie, and it will be running EMUI 9.1. It’s expected to arrive for between €200 and €220.
