I\u2019ve been on Android<\/a><\/strong> my whole life. But if you ask me why, I can\u2019t point to one big thing or feature. It\u2019s actually all the small stuff I\u2019ve gotten used to over the years \u2014 things like clipboard history, reverse wireless charging, app pinning, notification history, and app pairs \u2014 that make ditching Android<\/a><\/strong> almost impossible for me.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Heck, a few of these are so underrated that even longtime Android users<\/a><\/strong> don\u2019t know they exist. I don\u2019t blame them, though. Google just doesn\u2019t talk about these features enough, so this list is my attempt to fix that.Which of these Android features do you think is underrated?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Notification history<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

If you\u2019ve ever swiped away an important notification \u2014 or worse, hit that \u201cClear all<\/a><\/strong>\u201d button by accident \u2014 Android has a feature that can bring those notifications back. The only catch is that it\u2019s not enabled by default, which means you\u2019ll need to turn it on before it can start logging anything.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Head to Settings -> Notifications -> Notifications history and turn on the toggle. Once you do, Android<\/a><\/strong> will keep a 24-hour log of every notification you get. Interestingly, this can also help you catch WhatsApp or Instagram messages<\/a><\/strong> that someone deleted after sending.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

App pairs<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Split-screen is easily one of Android<\/a><\/strong>\u2019s best productivity features. It lets you scroll through Instagram<\/a><\/strong> Reels while replying to messages, watch a YouTube video while reading an article, or take notes during a video call. There\u2019s plenty of room to get creative with it. What a lot of people miss, though, is that you don\u2019t have to keep setting up the same combinations manually every time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Once you have two apps in split-screen, open the recent apps menu, tap the pair icon at the top, and choose Add\/Save app pair<\/a><\/strong>. This adds a shortcut to your home screen that lets you open both apps in split-screen view with a tap.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Reverse wireless charging<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Most high-end Android phones<\/a><\/strong> support wireless charging at this point. But some of them, like the Galaxy and Pixel phones, also support reverse wireless charging. This basically turns the back of your phone into a small charging pad for your earbuds, smartwatch, or even another phone<\/a><\/strong>. Sure, you can also use a cable for this, and it\u2019s honestly much faster, but if you don\u2019t have one handy, this is a useful alternative.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

To use it, enable Wireless power sharing from Settings -> Battery<\/a><\/strong>, then place the device you want to charge on the back of the phone. It\u2019s useful in emergencies, though it\u2019s not something I\u2019d suggest you use for everyday charging.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Clipboard history<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

By default, Android<\/a><\/strong> can only remember the last text snippet or the image you copied. Once you copy something else, the previous item is gone. Gboard has a feature that can help with this. Open it inside any app, tap the clipboard icon on the toolbar, and enable Clipboard history<\/a><\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

From then on, everything you copy will show up on this list, and you can paste it whenever you need it. Gboard automatically clears these entries after an hour or so, which means you don\u2019t have to delete them manually. And the best part is that you can also pin specific items you need often, like your phone number<\/a><\/strong>, address, email, or anything else you need to paste regularly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

App pinning<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

App pinning<\/a><\/strong> is a feature that can lock your phone to a single app, and it\u2019s honestly one of the easiest ways to make handing your phone to a friend or a kid stress-free. All you have to do is open the recent apps overview, tap the app icon, and choose Pin to screen. If you don\u2019t see the option available, you\u2019ll need to enable it first by following this path: Settings app -> Security & privacy<\/a><\/strong> -> More security & privacy -> App pinning -> Use app pinning.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

After this, the other person can\u2019t switch apps<\/a><\/strong>, check notifications, or even go to the home screen. To get out, swipe up and hold (or press the back button if using 3-button navigation), then unlock the device. I find it perfect while handing my phone to my kid to watch YouTube or play a game.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Circle to Search text actions<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Circle to search<\/a><\/strong> is hardly a secret, really. But it\u2019s not just for looking up things. One of its most useful tricks is grabbing text from any screen \u2014 a screenshot, video frame, or an app that blocks copying.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Long-press the home button or navigation bar to open Circle to Search, then circle or tap the text you want to copy or translate. And it gets better. If you select a phone number or email address<\/a><\/strong>, you can tap to start a call or send an email.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Live Caption<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Live Caption<\/strong><\/a> is a feature that can add subtitles to any video that you\u2019re watching on your phone even when it\u2019s muted. It\u2019s especially handy when you don\u2019t have earbuds and don\u2019t want to disturb people around you. I use it all the time while watching Reels that don\u2019t have subtitles or checking voice notes in public.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It\u2019s technically an accessibility feature, but that doesn\u2019t mean you can\u2019t use it. You can find it under Settings -> Accessibility<\/a><\/strong> -> Hearing enhancements. On most phones, you can also trigger it from the volume panel. The caption box is flexible, too, so you can drag it around the screen to keep it out of the way and change the text style.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Reduce or disable animations<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Every time an app opens, a window closes, or a menu slides in, Android<\/a><\/strong> plays a short animation to smooth out the transition. They look great, sure, but they also take time and require processing. Speeding up or disabling those animations is a neat way to make your phone feel snappier.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Of course, this isn\u2019t something you need to do on a flagship phone. But if you\u2019ve got a budget Android phone or one that\u2019s struggling to keep up, this is definitely worth trying. This option is tucked away in Android\u2019s Developer Options<\/a><\/strong> menu, so you\u2019ll need to enable it first.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Then go to Settings -> System -> Developer options and lower Window<\/a><\/strong> animation scale, Transition animation scale, and Animator duration scale. Turning them off entirely cuts animation entirely, which can feel a bit abrupt, but it\u2019ll surely make your phone feel much faster.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
