{"id":3739,"date":"2022-03-18T06:53:57","date_gmt":"2022-03-18T06:53:57","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.tech-battery.com\/batteriesblog\/?p=3739"},"modified":"2022-03-18T06:53:57","modified_gmt":"2022-03-18T06:53:57","slug":"meta-to-let-parents-limit-teenagers-virtual-reality-exploration","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.tech-battery.com\/batteriesblog\/meta-to-let-parents-limit-teenagers-virtual-reality-exploration\/","title":{"rendered":"Meta to let parents limit teenager&#8217;s virtual-reality exploration"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>New tools will allow parents to stop teenagers accessing inappropriate games and experiences via Meta&#8217;s virtual reality (VR) headset.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Questions have been raised about whether it was doing enough to protect children from inappropriate content.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Meta-owned Instagram has also rolled out further parental controls, the plans for which were revealed last year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It comes as the UK government legislates to protect children online.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Strip clubs<br>\nThe Quest headset&#8217;s terms of service say users should be over 13.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;Providing age-appropriate and safe experiences for teens while also empowering them to explore in VR is a balancing act&#8221;, Oculus, the Meta-owned company that makes the Quest, blogged.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>BBC News has previously reported a researcher posing as a teenager was able to access virtual strip clubs in a popular VR app &#8211; not made by Meta- using a Quest headset.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Now, Oculus is rolling out tools to:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>allow parents to lock specific apps directly from VR to stop teenagers accessing them<br>\nblock teenagers from downloading or purchasing age-inappropriate apps in the Quest Store<br>\nrelease a &#8220;Parent Dashboard&#8221;, accessible from the Oculus mobile app, to &#8211; if both adult and teenager agree &#8211; allow parents to link to their child&#8217;s account<br>\nUsing the dashboard, parents will be able to:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>view all the apps their child owns<br>\nbe notified when their child makes a purchase in VR<br>\nknow how much time their child is spending in VR<br>\nview their child&#8217;s list of Oculus Friends<br>\nThe new controls in Instagram and VR are part of what Meta calls its &#8220;Family Center&#8221;.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Launching in the US, and then globally in the coming months, these will let parents:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>see how much time their teenager spends on Instagram<br>\nset the hours during which their child can use the app<br>\nreceive updates on what accounts they follow and are followed by<br>\nInitially, teenagers themselves will have to initiate these controls.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Later, parents will be able to do so &#8211; with their child&#8217;s consent.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>New tools will allow parents to stop teenagers accessing inappropriate games and experiences via Meta&#8217;s virtual reality (VR) headset.
